~Briar~

Time seemed to stop as Alpha Landon said those two words: “It’s me.”

Even though I knew he drank the potion and had to tell me the truth, I still couldn't believe it.

He was my father? The man who had captured us, held us prisoner, forced us to do his dirty work, encouraged his pack to look down on us, threatened our lives more times than I could count... he was my father?

It didn't make any sense. He must have known it the whole time, or at least before my mother died, and if he did know, why would he treat me the way he had?

What had I done to deserve that?

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to stop all the thoughts racing around my head, and when I opened them again, the Alpha was frozen in place, his eyes still watching me, but not moving at all.

Now time really had stopped.

“Briar, it's okay. We're here to help.”

Aurelia's voice came from right beside me and I nearly jumped out of my skin. She was holding onto my shoulder this time rather than my hand, but as she had the night before, when I took a nervous step backward, she followed right behind me, not letting go.

“I would really like to explain how this works, but we don't have much time," she said with an apologetic shrug. "Can you tell us what's happening here?”

She gestured to the room around us, turning to look at everyone, and I did the same. That was when I saw that not only was Alpha Landon frozen but so was everyone else in the room too. Everyone except for me, Aurelia, and Killian, who was standing just a few steps away.

A pang of guilt hit me as I saw Killian, now that I knew what my mother had done. I wanted to apologize to him, and to Jaxon, but Aurelia had just said there wasn't a lot of time. I didn't know how they got here or how they were doing what they were doing, but they had come back as they promised to. I was just going to have to trust them.

“We really are here to help,” Killian said, his deep voice a vivid contrast to Aurelia's soft and soothing tones. At least this time he didn't sound upset, not like he had when he had been in my house last night. “But we need to move quickly. Please, tell us as much as you can.”

I nodded, trying to collect my thoughts. So much had just happened, so many things had been revealed, that I hardly knew where to start, but I tried to focus on what they really needed to know. “Jaxon and his friend Dane came to try to help us."

Aurelia nodded, encouraging me to continue.

"They were going to poison Alpha Landon, and I gave them a plant to do that, but it didn't work. I'm not sure what happened next, but somehow the Alpha got them both tied up and he gave Dane a truth-telling potion to try to get information out of him.
